Promise Village… An Eclectic Approach to Treating Your Son with Self-Harm Issues
We are here to treat your son who is struggling with Self-Harm, a condition in which he is purposely causing himself injury; at times by punching, head banging, drinking dangerous liquids like bleach or detergent, breaking bones or preventing his wounds from healing.
Self-Harm (also known as self-abuse, self-injury or self-mutilation) can be the method by which he can best communicate feelings he can’t otherwise articulate, diverting himself from difficult emotions, or gain control over, at least, his body if he feels he can’t control anything else in his life.
Many boys who suffer with Self-Harm report some type of childhood abuse (sexual or physical), and almost all sufferers say they were discouraged from showing emotions. Self-Abuse is not generally seen as a cry for help, since boys usually do it secretly, and work to cover up not only the actions, but also the emotions leading to it. Your child may feel alone or empty inside, frightened of intimate relationships. Self-harming behaviors can be a sign of several different psychiatric illnesses or personality disorders, so should be diagnosed professionally.
A Sophisticated Clinical Program For Your Son with Self-Harm
Because Self-Injury may be linked to a variety of mental disorders (i.e.: depression, eating disorders, etc.) it is especially crucial to get a proper diagnose for your child.
There is not a single treatment approved for this disorder, but an array of options, such as different types of psychotherapy. Treatment might include hospitalization or outpatient therapy (helping him comprehend damaging thoughts and behaviors, acquiring skills in developing outside relationships, etc.), mindfulness-based therapies (which help him to live in the present and more correctly interpret the actions of those around him) and, possibly, medication.
Promise Village…Cultivating your Son’s Potential and Strengths
Promise Village is a non-denominational, highly therapeutic, residential facility for struggling boys, using an eclectic treatment approach with a Relation-based model of care (the basis of which is that relationships are the top predictor of positive treatment outcomes). We offer a clinically sophisticated program of the highest quality in a positive home-like environment, in which our boys can develop confidence, respect, self-esteem, reliability and self-control.
We create a Master Treatment Plan for which we tailor goals in treating his Self-Harm, identify core issues, help your son heal from past struggles and learn healthy coping skills, eliminate thinking errors, reconcile discord and develop a new attitude toward life.
Our treatment program is comprised of a multi-modal approach; Frequent group (along with individual and family) therapy is invaluable due to the tremendous attention boys this age place on being accepted by their peer group, and in which they hammer out issues of respect, value, frustration, disagreement, leading to resolution and emotion management in a productive and safe environment.
Animal-assisted therapy teaches social skills and responsibility, and the kids learn first to trust animals, and eventually, humans. Recreational therapy is meant to be fun, but with teachable moments, where teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills are honed. At all times are the boys closely supervised by Therapists and Life Coaches, who motivate and model a positive lifestyle, facilitate enrichment opportunities and develop nurturing and trusting relationships. Psychiatric Evaluations allow for constant monitoring, as we strive to reduce/eliminate his need for medications as your boy grows in ability to self-regulate and resolve his core issues.
In spite of everything you’ve tried, and all the heartbreak, fear and discouragement you’ve experienced, when we look at your child we will see his possibilities, and not his problems. We will help him overcome his challenges, discover his strengths and focus on his PROMISES yet to be fulfilled, knowing that long after he leaves our care, his future can be a bright one.
