Life in the Milieu: Promise Village is a Caring, Relational, Home-Like Setting where Therapy is Part of Every Aspect of Daily Life
Promise Village is an exceptional residential treatment center and boarding school for at-risk adolescent and teenage boys. Situated on 70 acres of ranch land in Davisburg, Michigan, about 30 minutes from Flint and an hour from the Detroit airport, we are easily easily accessible from Wooster, Ohio and cities across the country. We use assorted forms of therapy in an eclectic model that lets us make a program tailor-made for each boy. The cornerstone of our culture is our Life Coaches, staff who live and work on campus with residents, being positive role models and looking out for everyday “teachable moments.” We call this loving, safe environment the “milieu,” and it simply means that we embrace your teen with an upbeat place where change can happen.
Animal-Assisted Therapy and Activities
Children and teens bond quickly with animals even if they can’t or won’t trust people. Spending time with an animal-friend teaches empathy and breaks down walls, building relational skills that boys can transfer later to human relationships. Dogs and in particular horses are the emphasis of our well-loved and professional animal therapy, but our farm also houses exotic birds; outdoor cats; miniature goats, horses, and donkeys; llamas; and a friendly cow.
Boarding School for Boys that Includes Improving Academic Performance and Motivations
We help children and teens name the reasons for their previous troubles in school, and then we lessen those reasons. As they set objectives for their lives and see how school helps them meet those goals , they gain motivation to do well in school. With a personalized academic plan for each child, support from Life Coaches and Therapists, and consistent instruction, students display steady, if not radical, improvement.
Spiritual Development and PROMISES for Character Growth
Promise Village is a non-denominational faith-based organization. We look at spiritual needs as part of treating the whole person. Residents work a step at a time through eight “PROMISES” principles designed for introducing personal values into their lives. In three stages, children and teens build on their strengths to learn the values in their own lives; then they begin to help and serve their peers; and finally they transfer their progress back to the home environment.
