Depression is more than feelings of sadness. It involves a constant state of feeling helpless, hopeless, and worthless that effects an entire teenager’s life. An adolescent may find nothing that will suppress their feelings of depression. Symptoms of teen depression are a loss of normal activities or hobbies, sleep pattern changes, weight fluctuation, loss of energy, irritability, self-loathing, trouble concentrating, and/or unexplained aches and pains. Depression carries a stigma and is misunderstood by many people. For this reason, teens and their families may be reluctant to seek help. However, symptoms of teen depression should be taken serious and treated appropriately before leading to more destructive behaviors.
Parents of a depressed child may not recognize the symptoms because of the irritability and hostility that accompanies depression for teenagers. They may view the symptoms as normal parts of adolescence. However, it’s important for parents to identify the symptoms of depression before it negatively effects their lives further. Depression can lead adolescents to do poorly in school, drop out of activities, self-medicate on drugs or alcohol, and/or contemplate suicide. Depression is a major cause of teen suicide emphasizing the importance of seeking treatment.
Treatment for depression involves individual therapy which can help the adolescent effectively cope with life’s challenges and feelings of hopelessness. Clinical therapy can also uncover the root causes of their depression, so that they can be worked through. Healthy changes to diet and exercise can reduce depression symptoms, as well as learning stress management techniques. Medications can be used to supplement treatment with depression as well. With treatment, adolescents often reduce or eliminate their depression symptoms.
