Treating Your Son with Borderline Personality Disorder
We at Promise Village can treat your child with Borderline Personality Disorder, a mental health illness in which he might exhibit atypical depth and variation of moods, unrelenting instability in his interpersonal relationships, self-image and conduct. Borderline Personality Disorder (also sometimes referred to as Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder) might bring about self-loathing, discernable mood changes set off by perceived rebuff, isolation or disappointment. With BDP, he might be excessively sensitive to critique, and his feelings toward others subject to rapid shifts and changes. Feelings of unimportance might lead to risky, impulsive and reckless behavior.
If your boy struggles with Emotionally Unstable Personality Disorder he is likely to experience things (or people) in extremes, either perfect or terrible, something (someone) great one day can be horrendous the next; very black and white thinking. This can lead him to chronic negligent actions (in food or drug intake, finances, driving or sex), frequent displays of annoyance or unsuitable anger, self-mutilating or suicidal behavior.
As with many other personality disorders, while the causes for BPD are not known, a combination of environmental, genetic factors and brain chemistry are thought to be causal. Higher risk might also come from a close family member who has the disorder, or from childhood abuse or neglect.
Program For Your Son with Borderline Personality Disorder
Untreated, your son can face grave complications related to isolation and relationship problems, money or legal troubles, many of those connected to substance abuse.
Treatment is primarily therapy-based but can be thorny, because there must be a great deal of trust between your teen and his therapist, something often difficult to achieve because of the swift and extreme mood swings. Distinctive treatment types might include interpersonal therapy, cognitive behavioral therapy, and psychodynamic therapy.
Certain medications are sometimes successful, although they are not a normal part of the protocol.
Helping parents and their children/teens who are dealing with rebellion, school underachievement, disrespect, relational conflict, and behavioral/emotional struggles is the very reason for our existence.
Promise Village…Your Son’s Potential and Strengths
Promise Village is a non-denominational, highly therapeutic, residential facility for struggling boys, using an eclectic treatment approach with a Relation-based model of care (the basis of which is that relationships are the top predictor of positive treatment outcomes). We offer a clinically sophisticated program of the highest quality in a positive home-like environment, in which our boys can develop confidence, respect, self-esteem, reliability and self-control.
We create a Master Treatment Plan for which we tailor goals in treating his Borderline Personality Disorder, identify core issues, help your son heal from past struggles and learn healthy coping skills, eliminate thinking errors, reconcile discord and develop a new attitude toward life.
Our treatment program is comprised of a multi-modal approach; Frequent group (along with individual and family) therapy is invaluable due to the tremendous attention boys this age place on being accepted by their peer group, and in which they hammer out issues of respect, value, frustration, disagreement, leading to resolution and emotion management in a productive and safe environment.
Animal-assisted therapy teaches social skills and responsibility, and the kids learn first to trust animals, and eventually, humans. Recreational therapy is meant to be fun, but with teachable moments, where teamwork, creativity and problem-solving skills are honed. At all times are the boys closely supervised by Therapists and Life Coaches, who motivate and model a positive lifestyle, facilitate enrichment opportunities and develop nurturing and trusting relationships. Psychiatric Evaluations allow for constant monitoring, as we strive to reduce/eliminate his need (if any) for medications, as your boy grows in ability to self-regulate and resolve his core issues.
Schooling takes place at The Academy, to further his academic advancement, where he’ll begin planning for his new life and start to comprehend the value of school learning to achieve those goals.
In spite of everything you’ve tried, and all the heartbreak, fear and discouragement you’ve experienced, when we look at your child we will see his possibilities, and not his problems. We will help him overcome his challenges, discover his strengths and focus on his PROMISES yet to be fulfilled, knowing that long after he leaves our care, his future can be a bright one.
