Admission Criteria
Criteria for admission to Promise Village, is as follows:
Candidates are considered for admission without regard to race, religion, or ethnic origin.
Sex: Male
Age Range: 10-17 years old
Length of Stay: 6 to 12 months and specific to the need of the resident
Admission Criteria: These are some of the struggles the child or teen may be exhibiting:
- Disrespectful to parents and/or other authority figures
- Struggles in the family and with siblings
- Violations of parental and family rules
- Argumentative
- Dishonest, secretive, or covert operating
- Lack of respect for the rights and feelings of others
- Anger management difficulties and/or mean to others
- Associates with negative peers
- Poor school performance
- Oppositional, rebellious, or non-compliant behaviors
- Not accepting responsibility for actions or behaviors
- Deliberately annoys others
- Problems related to personal and emotional functioning
Low self-esteem- Impulsivity, ADD, ADHD, or Inattentiveness
- Poor judgment and decision making skills
- Lack of motivation or plans for the future
- Relational problems or lack of emotional connectedness
- Grief and/or loss issues
- Anxiety
- Entitlement issues
- Adoption issues or Reactive Attachment Disorder
- Low frustration tolerance
- History of minor aggressive behavior
- Depression or hopelessness
- Difficulties with social skills
- Trauma or some type of abuse
- Disruptive behaviors
- Alcohol and/or substance use* (see exclusionary criteria)
- Resistance or unresponsive to others types of help
Exclusionary Criteria: We will not take children or teens who:
- Have serious assaultive or aggressive behaviors
- Have a history of severe sexual acting out or perpetration
- Have psychosis or a serious mental illness
- Have history of serious gang involvement
- Have a serious medical condition or illness
- Have a significant mental or cognitive impairment
- Have a recent history of fire-setting behaviors
- Have a primary diagnosis of alcohol and/or substance abuse*
Dr. Tim Coldiron is the Founder and Executive Director of Promise Village. From 1987 to 2000 he was the sole owner and clinical director of the largest free-standing outpatient mental health and substance abuse clinic in Michigan. He has been working professionally with children, adolescents, and their families for more than thirty years in clinical settings, youth organizations, churches, and youth residential treatment facilities. He holds a Ph.D. in Psychology, a Master’s in Clinical Social Work, a B.A. in Communications, and a B.A. in Education; in addition to this, he has learned a tremendous amount from the hundreds of families with whom he has been privileged to work alongside.
